Interview with Abhishek Joshi
“Building an MVP is the first thing. Scaling it up, optimizing it, putting marketing dollars can all wait. It also helps you tweak, refine, or pivot your idea if needed..” – Abhishek Joshi
Today we feature Abhishek Joshi, the founder at Dog with Blog. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Abhishek Joshi and I am the founder of Dog with Blog (https://dogwithblog.in). We aim at finding loving homes for abandoned and stray dogs using content marketing and social media. We have an active community of 116k fans across our social handles who help with adoptions. Our blog features articles related to pet care, adoptions, and dogs in pop culture.
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
Dog with Blog was conceptualized in 2010 when Abhishek Joshi, a digital marketer and dog lover, attempted at concocting a cocktail of the twin loves of his life – dogs, and words – in that order. The blog and social media community aim at driving awareness towards adoption as aginst buying of dogs.
Over the years, hundreds of homeless and abandoned dogs have found homes thanks to the community culture that thrives at Dog with Blog. The power of social media is unquestionable and the very fact that we have been able to find some of the strays, abandoned dogs loving homes bears testimony to the same.
In 2016, Dog with Blog was awarded the best blog (social cause).
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
In India, there are many homeless dogs who rarely fund takers despite them being best suited to withstand and flourish in tropical climates. We try to raise awareness towards their plight and with our active communities we run a dog adoption network that is completely free.
It is based in New Delhi, India but since we are internet-enabled we help adoptions across all major cities in India.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
The power of social media is unquestionable and our aha moment was when we could find homes for our first fosters – strays and abandoned dogs.
The blog received a warm welcome thanks to word of mouth and an encouraging reader base. The community culture sits at the core of the blog, and we have vibrant social media pages.
Interestingly, the Facebook page which was started two years later than the blog faced no hurdles in finding a community as the blog had had a substantial reader base by then. At present, there are more than 100k+ dog lovers in our communities — all organically built.
We also compiled and listed city-wide rescue and adoption centres so that people who were considering ‘buy dogs’ can also explore shelters and adoption.
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
Changing the mindset of the audience — preference for the pure breed as against mutts and mixed breeds has been a stellar challenge but gradually with our blog posts, we are trying to pitch forth the idea that that irrespective of the breed, it is the same loyal loving heart that beats in every dog.
Thankfully it is showing results and the adoption percentage of mutts has doubled in the past 3 years.
Importance of SEO and how it should be at the core of the content strategy.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I guess something that’s pivotal and must be considered foremost is finding the product-market fit, everything else can wait. Sure, it’d be nice to have a robust social media strategy or be well prepared to scale, but all of it comes second. Until you are building something that solves a problem, the traction wouldn’t sustain itself.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
App — Evernote (makes taking notes, ideas and mind maps really simple — a definite app for content marketers)
Tools — Google Analytics, WordPress, Canva, Mailerlite, Semrush
We are a lean team of three people and run the tools ourselves.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
Importance of SEO and how it should be at the core of the content strategy.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
Getting recognized as India’s best blog (social) in 2016-17 for driving adoptions of stray and homeless dogs.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
Exploring content partnerships with some key brands in the pet space, revamping the website UX, and working on a book idea.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
Building an MVP is the first thing. Scaling it up, optimizing it, putting marketing dollars can all wait. It also helps you tweak, refine, or pivot your idea if needed.
