Interview with Daniel Wood
“Enjoy the journey, find the right team, and get ready to get knocked down, more than once. Just remember, the winner is not the one who gets knocked down, it is the person who keeps getting up.” – Daniel Wood
Today we feature Daniel Wood, the founder at Momentum Property Education. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
I run an investment company with interests in property investing, venture capital, and businesses. Our mission in our companies, especially Momentum Property Education, is to educate and share what we have learned in our own investments so that others may have an easier journey than we had when starting up their property portfolio.
Can you please tell us in your own words how did you start?
It really started for my wife Gisela and I, when our oldest son William was born, about 8,5 years ago. We realized that when he started daycare, he would be spending more time with his teachers than with us, his parents. That was not acceptable!
We started searching for other alternatives and realized that creating income streams from investments, income that we would receive whether we went to the office or not was the only way to get more time with our son.
We hired a mentor to help us start our property investing company, and promptly got ripped off by builders and “business partners” for about £400,000. Money we didn’t have, money we had raised from investors.
A year into the business, with no hope in sight, our accountant called and told us it was time to bankrupt the company. We were heartbroken, but didn’t see a choice, until he said that if we bankrupt our company, we can start over, but our investors will lose everything – we couldn’t do that. We vowed to somehow turn our business around.
Thanks to the help of lots of amazing people we were able to! We restructured our company, got out of bad partnerships and got some great partners that allowed us to do successful deals, which helped us turn the business around.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do?
As a result of our lessons we started Momentum Property Education. Momentum helps individuals, in similar situations to where we were when starting out, to build up a team of trustworthy partners, learn how to protect yourself and how to build a successful portfolio.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
We started doing live events and quickly started getting invited all over europe. In 2019, we spoke at over 250 events all over the continent and even had invitations from South Africa and South America – then the pandemic changed everything! We shifted our focus to creating an online experience that allows people to invest from all over the world, to learn from all over the world, from the comfort of their own home. We realized that by creating these systems we could provide much more value to our customers and as a result our clients are more successful than ever, in 2020 alone, our clients bought properties in the UK for over £5,000,000 and are already on pace for £10,000,000 GBP in 2021!
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
From the start of our journey, there are a lot of lessons:
- Don’t chase the quick buck
The reason why we were so easy to rip off was because we were so eager, we saw the opportunities and didn't heed the warning signs. The most important thing is to work with partners you can trust, take the time to do your due diligence!
- There are a lot of amazing people out there.
We were on the brink of bankruptcy and people stepped up, they supported us, helped us, worked with us. Ask for help when you need it, you don’t have to do it on your own.
- Get a mentor
Find someone who has made the journey you want to do and follow their guidance.
Find someone who has made the journey you want to do and follow their guidance.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I would show myself the life I have now, “your dream will happen, but there will be challenges on the way, be smart about who you work with, you don’t have to get rich tomorrow, next year or the year after that, create something you can be proud of, work with people you trust and enjoy the journey as much as the destination”. Hopefully that would help me avoid some of the mistakes caused by the pressure I put on myself to “succeed fast”.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
I love using Trello to track our projects, teams and my personal to do list. I couldn’t run my business without it.
The other primary tools we use are to make communication easier, we have employees in India, Philippines, Sweden, UK, Dubai, Kenya and Polen. We use Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, Zoom and other tools to make sure that everyone feels connected and a part of the overall mission.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
That entrepreneurship really allows us to make an impact in the world, not just for ourselves and our family, but for people all over the world. I think that is what has made the largest impact on me individually.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
In business, I think it is the whole journey, how we have come from having a dream of a property portfolio, to losing £400,000 GBP, to creating our investment company and now helping hundreds of people realize their dreams. I am proud of the journey we have made.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
Our goal is to help 1 million people reach their goals and live their dream life. If we can be a small part of their journey by giving them the tools they need to succeed, that would be incredible. That is what we as a team work towards every day.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
Enjoy the journey, find the right team, and get ready to get knocked down, more than once. Just remember, the winner is not the one who gets knocked down the least number of times, it is the person who keeps getting up and gets up one more time then the world knocks you down.
