Interview with Jason Fuller
“The advice I would give other founders is that if you have a dream, act on it, Success will not happen overnight; it will take hard work and longevity.” – Jason Fuller
Today we feature Jason Fuller, the founder at Broward Funeral Home. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
My name is Jason Fuller, and I am a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer who helps families navigate through the most difficult times in their lives with compassion and trust.
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
I started my death care journey in 2008 by working for a family-owned funeral home and knew it was something I loved doing, so I attended Mortuary College in hopes of opening my own funeral home. Before this, I served as I.T. Director for a Marketing firm.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
Our Funeral Home provides families with Funeral Services, Memorials, Burials, and Cremations. We are based in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
Hard work and dedication have been assets in helping our Funeral Home remain successful. We provide dignified and trusted services and treat families with the respect they deserve.
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
One of the major challenges that we encounter is competing with Funeral Firms that have been in business for decades. Funeral Homes are a bit generation; typically when a person passes away, a family member will use the funeral home that served them in the past: “They buried great Grandma, Grandma, and Mom…” Being relatively new (less than 10 years) also puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to name recognition, as many families also choose a firm based on the name that comes to their mind after a death occurs.
I wish I had known how expensive it would be to start and continuously run our business. I did not know all of the unexpected costs that often arise, the constant price increases by suppliers, and the constant increase in overhead.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to remain patient and stay the course. I thought things would happen overnight and the business would take off much faster than it did. IN reality, it took time to build relationships, serve families, and truly earn the family’s ability to refer others and even return when another death occurs.
Our business is Service-Based, so we provide Embalming Services, which is the preservation of human remains through the arterial injection of preservative fluids. We also provide Burial and Entombment Services which are forms of disposition. Lastly, we contract cremation services which encompass the reduction of human remains through the flame.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
I wish I had known how expensive it would be to start and continuously run our business. I did not know all of the unexpected costs that often arise, the constant price increases by suppliers, and the constant increase in overhead.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
I wish I had known how expensive it would be to start and continuously run our business. I did not know all of the unexpected costs that often arise, the constant price increases by suppliers, and the constant increase in overhead.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
One of my biggest accomplishments has been just bonding with the families I serve and the larger community through my participation in nonprofits and mentorship programs.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
I would like to establish more Funeral Home locations, which would give us the ability to serve more areas while also building a great legacy for my wife and daughter to be able to join in the future.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
The advice I would give other founders is that if you have a dream, act on it, Success will not happen overnight; it will take hard work and longevity. Also, I would advise them to not make decisions without weighing the down-side risks…Always count up the costs. Lastly, I would advise them to not spend everything that comes in. There will always be some unexpected expense or some increase that is beyond control, and they would need that reserve to be able to dip into when those times come.
