Interview with Kelly Roach
“Train for your business like an athlete trains for their sport. That means taking total ownership over where you are and the outcomes you want to achieve. Commit to mastering the fundamentals and building muscle memory until you can execute over and over again with ease..” – Kelly Roach
Today we feature Kelly Roach, the founder at Unstoppable Entrepreneur. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
Absolutely! I’m the CEO and founder of the Unstoppable Entrepreneur, where we help online service-based business owners simplify their path to financial freedom through entrepreneurship and scale from 6 to 7 figures and beyond. I co-own three other companies – The Advance Women’s Expert Network, Social Sellers Academy, and The Courageous Brand, and I also host a top 15 podcast
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
For sure. Growing up, my dad worked for a nonprofit and my mom stayed home to take care of the 5 of us. We didn’t have a ton of money, and that’s 100% where my entrepreneurial spirit stemmed from. I cleaned my dance studio to pay for lessons, I worked since I was old enough to, and I knew that I had the choice to either settle for what I was handed or go out and make things happen.
I started my career working in a Fortune 500 and that’s where I realized I had already been helping people succeed in a corporate setting and I could do the same for business owners and entrepreneurs on an even bigger scale. I was managing hundreds of employees, and overseeing 11 different locations, so I understood the nuances of business development in a way that I thought could make a huge impact on other small business owners.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
We coach service-based entrepreneurs who want to scale their businesses, build their dream team and create an iconic, legacy brand that can stand the test of time and run like a well-oiled machine without them. Our team of 50+ is fully remote, and we work with clients across the globe.
Our flagship program focuses on the 5 core areas required to springboard from 6 to 7-figures: PR and positioning, content conversion, a scalable high ticket offer, team building, and a repeatable high volume sales system that you (or your team) can execute.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
As I rose the ranks in my career, I realized I wasn’t truly happy. The outward success wasn’t cutting it for me and I wanted more. I believe my true purpose on this planet is to lead others to freedom, fulfillment and financial abundance for themselves and their families and so I started my business on the side of my full time job as a senior VP. I worked on it in the mornings and evenings before and after work, until I was able to replace my salary and have money leftover to invest.
I spent about a year studying and learning everything I could about business, personal growth, coaching, the list goes on. I give a lot of credit to my mentor during my fortune 500 years, Dave, who saw my capabilities and was the biggest advocate for my growth and success.
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
I love developing people from within and growing talent within my own organization, so one of the hardest lessons I’ve learned as my business crossed over to the 8-figure mark was that a lot of the individuals we promoted from within, that were capable of leading at one level, weren’t really prepared to lead at the next level. It was tough to find the right balance of hiring outside executive talent and combining that with homegrown talent from the inside.
Sometimes, seeing the best in people is a great thing — and it’s something I pride myself on — but you can’t overestimate people’s capabilities, because that can put you in a tough spot when it comes to running the organization. There are always lessons and there are always things to learn when it comes to entrepreneurship.
I was a little bit naive about all the challenges you go through when you’re growing your business – because a lot of those challenges – you’re not the person that directly causes some of those things. So, sometimes you don’t even know to expect them. Whether it relates to people, your market, or your team, I wish I knew the magnitude of challenges we’d face on our journey from 7 to 8, and now paving the way to 9-figures.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Get started sooner. I didn’t start my business until I was almost 30, and it was something I was dreaming about and planning for a while. At the same time – I’d tell her to slow down and be patient because while we had amazing growth there’s an entire lifetime to learn and grow. You don’t have to do it all overnight.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
The number one tool I use is audio messaging right from my phone. It allows me to get important items across quickly and efficiently without having everyone stop their day for a phone call. I think it’s so much more powerful when someone can hear your voice and you can convey what you’re trying to say in a way that doesn’t require distracting or time-consuming formal meetings (that sometimes end up taking more time than they should).
Another tool is definitely live streaming. When I found out about live streaming, it blew my mind and I immediately realized the potential it had. I knew that was going to be completely life-changing for me and so many business owners, so that has been a complete godsend for the growth of the business. Being able to truly show up and connect live with my audience in real-time is huge.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
I was a little bit naive about all the challenges you go through when you’re growing your business – because a lot of those challenges – you’re not the person that directly causes some of those things. So, sometimes you don’t even know to expect them. Whether it relates to people, your market, or your team, I wish I knew the magnitude of challenges we’d face on our journey from 7 to 8, and now paving the way to 9-figures.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
There are great moments every single day along with entrepreneurship (and great challenges). But for me, I think the biggest joy is seeing the life-changing results our clients have been able to achieve.
Whether it’s retiring a spouse, finally buying their dream home, achieving true financial freedom, hitting a big revenue milestone, living out their life’s purpose…those are the things that light me up and make me proud. And for me personally, being able to retire my husband and keep my daughter home with us instead of putting her in day care is one of the things I’m most proud of. It’s absolutely helped her become a strong and confident little girl, and I can’t wait to see who she becomes and all that she accomplishes.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
One of my goals right now is to disrupt the education system through The Courageous Brand, which is one of the companies I co-own with my best friend Amy. We are really focused on elevating how we set the next generation up for success and providing alternate career pathways besides just the “traditional” path of going to college and getting a full-time 9-5 job. We’ve launched a gap-year program for 18-22 year olds who are unsure if college is the right path and want to explore the world of entrepreneurship or they are ready to take on their own business or family business and need the real-world experience taught to them by real-world business professionals.
And we are also launching a LEAP (Leveraging Entrepreneurship and Professionalism) program for middle school students to encourage them to learn critical thinking skills, develop an entrepreneurial mindset and build a sustainable business plan as part of the school’s Social and Emotional Learning curriculum.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
Train for your business like an athlete trains for their sport. That means taking total ownership over where you are and the outcomes you want to achieve. Commit to mastering the fundamentals and building muscle memory until you can execute over and over again with ease. Keep running the reps even when no one is there to clap for you.
Discipline and resilience is EVERYTHING. You have to do what you need to do, even when you don’t want to. And you have to get up, learn and improve when you fail. Continue chasing never ending improvement. Get 1% better everyday. Instead of constantly striving for perfection, focus on incremental steps forward.
No instant gratification decisions – make every single decision with the future in mind (even if it means sacrificing now so you can enjoy the rewards down the line).
