Interview with Lauren Moulding
“It’s so cheesy, but go for your dreams! I never thought I’d be running my own successful business, so I know there’s so many other people out there who feel the same. If you can dream it, you can live it. I did, so why can’t you?.” – Lauren Moulding
Today we feature Lauren Moulding , the founder at LolFace. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
I am Lauren Moulding, the founder of the beauty business Lolface, I worked as a Senior Diagnostic Radiographer for over 7 years within a large teaching hospital the NHS.
I was working my way up in the hospital sector, but I longed to be doing something creative & that’s when I fell in love with semi-permanent makeup.
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
I started doing semi-permanent makeup alongside my job in healthcare, but when I had enough training, I decided to leave my healthcare role to pursue microblading full time but went back to healthcare during the pandemic and I am still registered on the bank list to work within the healthcare sector. My background and experience in the healthcare sector helps me build trust and credibility with my clients.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
We are situated in Newcastle, Gateshead and we offer SPMU treatments and SPMU teaching courses, we are also a finalist for Health and Beauty Awards of the Year 2022 and have been recognised for their amazing semi-permanent makeup treatments for the last three years.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
LolFace have had some proud and successful moments throughout the journey, we have been a finalist for the Health and Beauty Awards of the Year 2022. Most recently we have started raising money to offer free treatments for people who have lost hair due to cancer treatments
and alopecia.
Cancer affects 1 in 2 people, and many of these people lose their hair due to the invasive treatments they go through. SPMU isn’t available on the NHS, so I want to offer the treatments for free.
I am motivated to do this as these treatments give them confidence after going through so much trauma. Our goal is to raise £2300, which would pay for 10 people to get free microblading or tattoo eyebrows at LolFace.
For every person that gets it paid for from the funding, I will also offer another completely free treatment so that will cover 20 people’s
treatments!
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
My biggest lesson so far is that not everyone will understand the effort and work that goes into running your own successful business.
Going into business, you think everyone around you will support you, but that is not the case. I now realise I just have to think myself lucky I have some family and friends who do support me completely.
Your life kind of gets taken over by business, and the people who love you, will understand this.
I wish I’d known it’s okay to not do absolutely everything on your own. I set up my own website, designed all of my own leaflets etc.
While this was fantastic experience and allowed me to grow my skills in areas I previously had none, it is very time consuming when I could have been focussing on other areas of the business where I already had skills and outsourced these tasks. It’s also okay to ask for help and advice from others!
When I first started I’d be embarrassed that it seemed like I didn’t know what I was doing, but we all have to start somewhere,
and there are so many people out there who want to help and have their brain’s picked! You could help them with your expertise too!
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
When I first started business, so many people in my family were telling me not to do it. I already had a successful career, so they didnt understand why I wanted to start again and run a business alongside my career. I wasn’t happy in my career, and I’m so proud of myself for starting the business, even with so many people telling me not to.
You have to do what’s right for you. You only live once. That’s the best advice I’d give to my younger self. The only thing I might wish I had done differently was to set the business up sooner!
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
I without a doubt wouldn’t have a business if it wasn’t for social media. My social media is my portfolio of work. It allows me to connect with potential clients and showcase my work.
Another tool I couldn’t live without in business is my booking system. I use Squarespace scheduling.
My pre care advice and aftercare etc is all emailed out automatically, along with deposits and my consent forms. I don;t have to think or worry about these things with my booking system!
Canva is a photo and video editing app, this is without a doubt the best tool a business needs! You can create fantastic adverts, leaflets, videos, just any sort of media!
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
I wish I’d known it’s okay to not do absolutely everything on your own. I set up my own website, designed all of my own leaflets etc.
While this was fantastic experience and allowed me to grow my skills in areas I previously had none, it isvery time consuming when I could have been focussing on other areas of the business where I already had skills and outsourced these tasks.
It’s also okay to ask for help and advice from others! When I first started I’d be embarrassed that it seemed like I didn’t know what I was doing, but we all have to start somewhere, and there are so many people out there who want to help and have their brain’s picked! You could help them with your expertise too!
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
My proudest moment in business is always when my clients look at their treatment results, and I see the smiles on their faces. Making people happy is my passion.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
I want to set up a not-for-profit organisation that is able to offer free SPMU for people who have suffered hair loss due to invasive treatments or illnesses – as this is currently not offered on the NHS. I want to grow this to a nationwide scale so everybody who has gone through trauma can have a little bit of happiness for free.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
It’s so cheesy, but go for your dreams! I never thought I’d be running my own successful business, so I know there’s so many other people out there who feel the same. If you can dream it, you can live it. I did, so why can’t you?
