Interview with Lee Fuller
“You are better than you think you are. .” – Lee Fuller
Today we feature Lee Fuller, the founder at Flaunt Digital. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
I’ve worked in digital for over 14 years, setting up Flaunt Digital in 2015. Nowadays, as well as all the operational stuff involved in my role as CEO, my day-to-day role is whatever I need to be in that moment.
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
I started building websites when I was 19, my SEO career came from spotting the route that I could specialise in and potentially – at the time – looked a little more lucrative.
The one thing that benefited me was having that technical experience. Being able to interpret web development and then look at how we put that into a growth strategy seemed to suit me quite well. So that’s how it all started. Websites first, on the side, and then becoming an SEO specialist.
It was a bit of a funny circumstance.
When I left the agency that I was at, I was many months into building a content marketing platform, which we then sold to fund Flaunt Digital. It wasn’t scary as such – daunting, I guess – because it was something we knew very well and we were pretty confident we could do it.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
We are a digital agency based in Leeds. We specialise in content marketing, web design & development, paid media & SEO. Flaunt Digital was born from the desire to build an agency that fixes the problems that exist in most agencies.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
Our people are the story behind our success. I am where I am through having the self-awareness to hire expert people around me and having the empathy to truly make the agency about the people.
After working in other agencies, Flaunt Digital was born from a realisation that we can do this better, so let’s do it. There was no big aha moment, but continued hard work, consistency, and employing the right people have led us to where we are now.
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
Know your craft, first of all. Double down on that. And then make it about people. Surround yourself with the right people. Try and onboard the right clients. It takes quite a lot of work to get to a point where you can be in the position to be selective about the clients you work with and it’s hard to keep that in mind when there are commercial elements in the background. That’s how I would view it and how I did view it – know your craft, surround yourself with the right people and try to work with the right kind of client.
Listening matters.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Recognising when to move on from something sooner. I spent a lot of time trying different things but hung onto some things too long rather than recognising or having the experience to know when I wasn’t applying myself to the best thing.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
The board and I have worked at big agencies with account managers, and when we came together to set the agency up we didn’t feel there was a need for that. Allowing the specialist to speak and work with the client directly helps us get there quicker. This builds better relationships, provides a higher level of service and in our experience, that’s something that resonates really well with clients.
When it comes to ‘not full service’ – again, when we set the agency up we built it around the skills we knew inside out. We’re specialists in those key areas. We’re not just brief grabbing – we don’t just go after whatever we can get. We know where we can deliver the best service and the best results and we stick to that so we don’t feel any necessity to diversify away from that.
Innovation and the ability to build the tools we need.
We are at the forefront of technology and we are dedicated to applying expertise to problems faced by our clients. If the tool we need doesn’t exist, we’ll build it.
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
Listening matters.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
When we had just 4 people working for us we won the New York Times account. When the first payment came through it arrived on a headed cheque from the New York Times – a name and branding everyone knows.
But if I’m really honest, every day brings a moment to be proud. Seeing 26 people working at an agency you started is truly humbling.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
Continuing to grow the agency but maintaining the culture and upholding our values.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
You are better than you think you are.
