Founder@ Interview
Interview with Tash Grossman
“I encourage all founders to build a support network of mentors and advisors in their industry. Seek out the people who have ‘been there and done that’ – their advice will be invaluable to your growth, both professionally and personally.” – Tash Grossman
Today we feature Tash Grossman, the founder at Slip. We hear their story in their own words, their successes, their challenges and their insights.
Let’s start by getting to know you. Can you please tell us a little bit about you and what you do?
I’m Tash, the CEO, and Co-founder of Slip. I’m 25, from North-West London, a massive Spurs fan, and pursuing the entrepreneurial dream.
A great introduction and start to this interview. Can you please tell us, how did you start, from what age, and what made you decide to change direction and start?
Prior to starting Slip, I worked in management consulting as a graduate of KPMG and then as a consultant at Gate One. In these roles, I specialised in advising companies on retail technology, technology risk, and innovation.
Gate One has a massive focus on innovation and entrepreneurship through their internal incubator and I had come into the company with the idea of digitising receipts. I had realised just how few digital alternatives to paper receipts existed and became determined to find a way to innovate the retail experience.
Across much of the retail sector, the process-heavy checkout experience is still dominant and this contributes to 11.2 billion till receipts are printed annually – 90% of which end up in the bin!
Last year I set up Slip with my Co-founder Eddy Herman and I’m loving every second of it.
Thank you for that insight. So can you tell us…What does your business do and where is your company based?
Slip is a retailer-agnostic mobile app that allows customers to receive digital receipts through the leveraging of QR code technology. We also enable users to view and manage their omnichannel spending and receive exclusive discount offers and personalised content based on buying habits.
For retailers, we provide in-depth data and insights around consumer trends at a product level.
Sustainability is also a key part of what we do and we’re striving to eliminate the need for harmful non-recyclable receipts.
What’s the story behind your success? What led to your aha moment? how did you get to where you are now?
My lightbulb moment came about in Zara when I was trying to exchange a pair of trousers. The buckle had broken so they were unwearable, but on this occasion, I had lost the receipt. Unfortunately for me I was told ‘no receipt, no return’ and stood awkwardly at the checkout, holding the broken trousers.
It was at that moment that I questioned how purchases have become so advanced that I can pay using my watch, yet the post-payment experience is printed on a piece of paper that only ends up getting scrunched up and thrown in a kitchen drawer or lost in old plastic bags.
I wanted things to change, and that is how Slip began life!
Thank you for sharing that. What’s been your life’s biggest lesson so far?
As a business leader facing rejection and learning to use it to your advantage is one of the biggest lessons you can learn as you start out on your journey.
Since setting up Slip I have learned not to take rejection personally and instead see it as a lesson which I believe has made me more resilient in the long run.
Not everyone is going to love your idea and most importantly, that is okay.
If you were to go back in time, what piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I would ask myself ‘what is the worst that can happen, often realising that the answer is ‘not much’! Life goes so quickly, with unexpected turns and twists just around the corner and you only regret the things you don’t do.
Every negative can be spun into a positive learning experience so take all the chances you are presented with.
We’re nearly halfway through our interview so it’s a great time to ask how does your business run. What three tools make your business run better?
Notion – we use this to take and share notes within the team, acting as an intranet and source of the truth
Miro – we use Miro’s digital whiteboard to brainstorm ideas and most importantly, for our weekly goal setting
Slack – team communication on the go!
What do you know now that you wished you had known before?
Not everyone is going to love your idea and most importantly, that is okay.
What has been your greatest or proudest achievement or moment?
So far, the proudest moment was when we closed our funding round. After months of ‘grafting’ and ‘schmoozing’ investors, we finally hit the target and it was an amazing feeling.
What future life goals do you want to achieve and why?
As we prepare for our official launch this summer I’m excited about what else lies in store. As Slip continues to scale we want to become the in-store checkout option of choice and help everyone to become more sustainable by going encouraging paperless receipts.
Building a truly diverse and inclusive company is also important to me and Eddy and we want to ensure that we’re creating an impressive team culture and legacy.
To finish our inspire questions…”We believe that sharing inspiring words can inspire others.” If there was one positive thing you would say to someone to inspire and empower them what would it be and why?
I encourage all founders to build a support network of mentors and advisors in their industry. Seek out the people who have ‘been there and done that’ – their advice will be invaluable to your growth, both professionally and personally.
