Founder@ Quick Interview
Interview with William Scott Forshaw
Today we feature William Scott Forshaw, CEO and founder of Maxwell-Scott, a luxury leather brand committed to British design and Italian craftsmanship.
Founded in 2002, Maxwell-Scott reinterprets the art of leather craftsmanship for the modern day. The brand’s beginnings can be traced back to a recreational tour of Italy by William’s mother, Jacqueline. The discovery of leather goods on family travels combined with strong entrepreneurial instincts saw the potential for a new breed of bag maker and Maxwell-Scott was born.
Hi William, can you tell me about Maxwell-Scott?
Maxwell Scott is an international luxury leather brand with websites in the UK, US, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Canada and Australia. We sell Italian-crafted, vegetable tanned leather bags and accessories for both men and women. We are headquartered in York, near my home town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Since our start in 2002 to present day, our company continues to epitomise fine Italian craftsmanship and timeless British design.
Your company has had phenomenal growth and success, and your brand is known and shipped all over the world. What do you consider as some of the keys to your success?
Being adaptable and knowledgeable about all aspects of your business. Cultivating a strong and experienced team that will help to drive your company forward much faster than you’d ever achieve alone.
That is great insight, you mentioned about being adaptable and knowledgeable about all aspects of your business as a key to success, that must mean you are always thinking. Would you describe yourself as a thinker?
Yes, I am a thinker, my brain rarely shuts off and I am constantly mastering new plans and thinking through new ways to optimise the company to inevitably improve sales.
“Trust your instincts and know when it’s the right time to let go of certain projects.”

Great advice, what words of advice would you give to other founders and entrepreneurs considering a path to start their own business?
1. Stay alert and attuned to your industry.
2. Learn who is best to collaborate with you on your business quickly.
3. Stay inspired.
As someone who has stayed attuned to the changes in the industry over the years, what has been your biggest lesson so far?
I’d probably say that the biggest thing I have learned is that maintaining a down-to-earth demeanour in business is paramount to ensuring you have the right people around you. Being open and honest gets you places and I have little time for anything else – you have to be wise and efficient with who and what you focus on.
Thank you it has been great learning more about your founder story and Maxwell-Scott
